2008 Annual Report on International Religious Freedom
Oct.7 (DP.net).- US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, introduced to the public on September 19, this Annual Report covering the 12 months ended on 20 June 2008. This report has been issued annually for 10 years since the US Congress approved the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998. The report is now available to the public on the Internet >>HERE and institutions may get free hard copies if requested.
This work supplements the most recent Human Rights Reports by providing additional detailed information with respect to matters involving international religious freedom. It includes individual country chapters on the status of religious freedom worldwide. According to the Report, the IRF Act requires «the designation of countries that have "engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom" during the reporting period».
Following its precise guidelines, the Report has designated Burma, China, North Korea, Iran, Sudan, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan as "Countries of Particular Concern". In addition, "countries where religious freedom is of significant concern" include Afghanistan, Algeria, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela and Vietnam.
La Habana, 9 de Enero del 2008- Antonio (Tony Díaz) Sánchez está siendo asediado por autoridades carcelarias y debido a su protesta de huelga de hambre es conducido desde la jaula de 5 y medio metros por cinco que compartía hacinado con 27 presos políticos y 9 literas, a convivir con presos comunes de la más alta peligrosidad.
Esta es una práctica de castigo máximo que es sofisticadamente organizada por las autoridades del penal para intimidar y exponer al recluso a los más bárbaros atropellos de parte de delincuentes de alto riesgo, criminales.
Como referente podemos utilizar el caso de Rolando Jiménez, gestor del Proyecto Varela y en la actualidad cumpliendo condena en la prisión Guayaba, Isla de la Juventud.
Rolando fue primer teniente del ministerio del interior. Abogado de oficios cargo de procesar persecución contra el trafico de drogas y en un reciente programa de la mesa redonda fue atacado por el periodista Lázaro Barredo y este le contestó valientemente a los insultos de Barredo. En represalias este 31 de diciembre pasado el régimen lo metió a convivir con presos comunes y provocaron a estos a que le dieran tremenda paliza que lo han dejado desfigurado.
Alertamos a la comunidad internacional, a los organismos responsables de la defensa de los derechos humanos y a gobiernos y autoridades a que exijan del gobierno cubano la atención inmediata y restitución de garantías en su reclusión para Antonio (Tony) Díaz Sánchez y los presos políticos que en estos momentos están recibiendo una represión nunca vista anteriormente.

Havana, January 9, 2008- Antonio (Tony Díaz) Sánchez is besieged by prison authorities and due to his hunger strike protest, he was taken from the 5 and a half meter by five meter cell that he crowdedly shared with 27 other political prisoners and 9 bunks, to live with highly dangerous common prisoners.
This is a practice of maximum punishment that is sophisticatedly organized by the prison authorities in order to intimidate and to expose the prisoner to the most barbarian attacks by high risk delinquents, criminals.
We can use as an example the case of Rolando Jiménez, a Varela Project organizer who is currently serving a sentence at the Guayaba prison, on the Isle of Youth.
Rolando was first lieutenant in the Ministry of Interior. He was the legal counsel in charge of processing prosecutions against drug trafficking and in a recent "roundtable" program he was attacked by the journalist Lázaro Barredo. He responded courageously to Barredo's insults. In retaliation, on December 31 the regime put Rolando in a cell to live with common prisoners and provoked these prisoners so that they gave Rolando a severe beating that left him disfigured.
We alert the international community, institutions responsible for the defense of human rights, and governments and authorities to demand that the Cuban government pay immediate attention and restore the rights that Antonio (Tony) Díaz Sánchez and other political prisoners are entitled to in prison as they are subjected to a level of repression in these moments that has never been seen before.

Denuncias de violaciones de los derechos humanos
La Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas recibe anualmente alrededor de 400,000 denuncias de violaciones a los derechos humanos, de los que gran parte llegan a través del número de fax de emergencia que funciona las 24 horas del día: (41-22) 917-0092. Cada año, se reciben por esta vía casi 200,000 comunicaciones informando sobre violaciones.
