2008 Annual Report on International Religious Freedom
Oct.7 (DP.net).- US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, introduced to the public on September 19, this Annual Report covering the 12 months ended on 20 June 2008. This report has been issued annually for 10 years since the US Congress approved the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) of 1998. The report is now available to the public on the Internet >>HERE and institutions may get free hard copies if requested.
This work supplements the most recent Human Rights Reports by providing additional detailed information with respect to matters involving international religious freedom. It includes individual country chapters on the status of religious freedom worldwide. According to the Report, the IRF Act requires «the designation of countries that have "engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom" during the reporting period».
Following its precise guidelines, the Report has designated Burma, China, North Korea, Iran, Sudan, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan as "Countries of Particular Concern". In addition, "countries where religious freedom is of significant concern" include Afghanistan, Algeria, Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela and Vietnam.
AGUADORES PRISON: AN EXTERMINATION CAMP? [vea la denuncia en español más abajo]
Havana, September 6, 2006.- In the outskirts of the city of Santiago de Cuba there is a prison known as "Aguadores," a title that turns into an irony before the reality of the prison in which, at least for the prisoners, for weeks there is no running water, the hygienic conditions are deplorable and the insects devour the prisoners that are piled in there.
The prisoner Alexis Rodríguez Fernández, a member of the Christian Liberation Movement, was summarily and arbitrarily tried and condemned in April 2003 to 15 years in prison on false charges as a result of his civic and legal activities in the Varela Project campaign. Alexis was transferred to the Aguadores prison last August 25th, without receiving any explanation. Previously he was confined in the prison known as Mar Verde, in the same province of Santiago de Cuba, in which he had carried out, together with two other political prisoners, a hunger strike for close to twenty days in protest of the abuse and cruel and humiliating treatment they received. As a result of this hunger strike, his health remains seriously damaged and he suffers from neuropathy (nervous disorder). In spite of his health condition, Alexis was transferred to Aguadores, where a tank car serves the prisoners water every several days in an irregular manner. When this happens, the prisoners, like a horde, must collect water with unhygienic receptacles, in which they store the water for drinking and for all of their basic needs. Several days go by without being able to bath since they must store the water for drinking. On occasion they have prohibited Alexis from going to the patio in search of water when the tank car arrives and he is confined to a large cell, with dozens of common prisoners, and with a collective bathroom for all of them. The living space or rather the "deadly space," is minimal. To get between two adjacent bunk beds one must pass through sideways since only a few centimeters separate them. The overcrowding is unbearable and they only let him out into the sun once a week. Alexis is not receiving medical attention, despite his serious health condition.
The country's authorities are responsible for these conditions and for the cruel and inhumane treatment against Alexis and against all the prisoners that are confined in what are truly giant cages, comparable only with the horrific conditions of Nazi extermination camps or with other prisons of Cuba, which in the last decades have stood out for having all the conditions for the physical and psychological destruction of the prisoners.
That is why we are making a call to all Cubans to not remain indifferent in the face of this situation that today confronts the prisoner of conscience Alexis Rodriguez Fernandez and other peaceful political prisoners whose only crimes consist of defending the rights of all Cubans and presenting paths towards peaceful solutions to the problems and evils that afflict Cuban society.
We extend once again our call to the international community so that it raises its voice in solidarity with the Cuban political prisoners.
The Christian Liberation Movement is in solidarity with Alexis Rodriguez Fernandez in his demand for decent confinement conditions and just and humane treatment, and also calls on the Cuban government for the immediate release of all the peaceful political prisoners.

PRISIÓN DE AGUADORES ¿CAMPO DE EXTERMINIO?
La Habana, 6 de septiembre de 2006- En las afueras de la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba, está la prisión conocida como "Aguadores" título que se convierte en un sarcasmo ante la realidad de que en la prisión, al menos para los prisioneros, desde hace semanas no hay agua corriente, las condiciones higiénicas son deplorables y las chinchas y otros insectos devoran a los prisioneros hacinados allí.
El prisionero Alexis Rodríguez Fernández, perteneciente al Movimiento Cristiano Liberación, fue condenado en juicio sumario y arbitrario, en Abril del 2003 a 15 años de prisión con falsos argumentos debido a su actividad cívica y legal en la Campaña del Proyecto Varela. Alexis fue trasladado a la prisión de Aguadores el pasado 25 de agosto, sin ninguna explicación. Anteriormente estuvo confinado en la prisión conocida como Mar Verde, en la misma provincia de Santiago de Cuba, en la que realizó, junto a otros dos prisioneros políticos, una huelga de hambre de cerca de veinte días en protesta por los maltratos, las malas condiciones y el trato cruel y humillante que recibían. Debido a esta huelga de hambre su salud quedó gravemente deteriorada, padeciendo una neuropatía.
Aun en esas condiciones de salud Alexis es trasladado a Aguadores, donde un carro cisterna sirve agua a los prisioneros cada varios días y de manera no regular. Cuando esto ocurre, los prisioneros como un enjambre tienen que colectar agua con recipientes, nada higiénicos, en los que guardan agua para tomar y para todas las necesidades. Pasan varios días, hasta más de una semana, sin que puedan bañarse, pues el agua la guardan para beber. En ocasiones a Alexis le han prohibido salir al patio a buscar agua cuando viene el carro cisterna y está confinado en una gran celda, con decenas de prisioneros comunes, con un baño colectivo para todos. El espacio vital o más bien el "espacio mortal", es mínimo. Entre dos literas contiguas hay que pasar de lado, pues sólo las separan unos centímetros. El hacinamiento es insoportable y sólo le sacan al sol una vez a la semana. Alexis no está recibiendo atención médica, no obstante su seria situación de salud.
Las autoridades del país son responsables de estas condiciones y del trato cruel e inhumano contra Alexis y contra todos los prisioneros a los que tienen confinados en verdaderas jaulas gigantes, sólo comparables con las dantescas condiciones de los campos de exterminio nazis o con otras prisiones de Cuba, que en las últimas décadas se han destacado por tener todas las condiciones para la destrucción física y psíquica de los prisioneros.
Por eso hacemos un llamado a todos los cubanos para que no sean indiferentes ante esta situación que enfrenta hoy el prisionero de conciencia Alexis Rodríguez Fernández y los demás prisioneros políticos pacíficos cuyos únicos delitos han consistido en defender los derechos de los cubanos todos y presentar vías de solución pacífica para los problemas y males que aquejan a la sociedad cubana.
Extendemos una vez más nuestro llamado a la comunidad internacional a que levante su voz en solidaridad con los prisioneros políticos cubanos.
El Movimiento Cristiano Liberación, se solidariza con Alexis Rodríguez Fernández en su reclamo de tener condiciones de reclusión dignas y un trato humano y justo, y a su vez exige al gobierno cubano la inmediata liberación de todos los prisioneros políticos pacíficos.

Denuncias de violaciones de los derechos humanos
La Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas recibe anualmente alrededor de 400,000 denuncias de violaciones a los derechos humanos, de los que gran parte llegan a través del número de fax de emergencia que funciona las 24 horas del día: (41-22) 917-0092. Cada año, se reciben por esta vía casi 200,000 comunicaciones informando sobre violaciones.
