Declaration on the policy of the EU towards Cuba - 2007/06/11 19:25 Havana, May 24, 2007

Dear friends,

In view of the meetings the European Union will hold this month to debate its relations with Cuba, the Christian Liberation Movement (MCL) has sent the following appeal from Cuba, in which they ask that the reality of the Cuban people be taken into account at these meetings, and not just the perspective advanced by the Cuban authorities. There is an appeal from the Cuban people that must be taken into consideration and does not represent the official position of the Cuban government. It is asking for two things:

1. The recognition of the manifesto "Unity for Freedom," which contains the common principles and objectives of practically all the representatives of major organizations from the peaceful democratic opposition in Cuba.
2. The call for the liberation of all Cuban political prisoners who are imprisoned for peacefully promoting, defending, and exercising universally recognized human rights.

Please read the MCL statement below and help us in circulating it to the international community and media.

Regards,

Francisco De Armas
Julio Hernández

International Representatives, Christian Liberation Movement

To the European Commission

Your Excellencies,

With regard to the meeting of the European Commission that will take place in June of this year, where relations between our countries will be discussed, we present to you the manifesto “Unity for Freedom”. This document contains the common principles and objectives of practically all representatives of major organizations belonging to the peaceful democratic opposition in Cuba. For this reason, although we do not speak on behalf of all who have signed it, the Christian Liberation Movement calls upon the European Union to support this document and to take it as a reference pertinent to its relations with Cuba.

Our movement believes that the European Union should make a priority to maintain its demands for the liberation of all Cuban political prisoners who are in prison for peacefully promoting, defending and exercising their universally recognized human rights and for supporting the right of our people to democratic change and to respect the "right of all Cubans to have all of their rights," as it is expressed in that manifesto of unity.

We send you our fraternal greetings.

Oswaldo José Payá Sardiñas Minervo Lázaro Chil Siret
