International Campaign on Tibet - 2006/05/14 17:08

The International Campaign for Tibet is a non-for-profit effort headed by John Ackerly and publicly represented in the media by Richard Gere, among other personalities, committed to promote human rights in that part of the World and to do whatever is peacefully possible to speed-up a negotiated solution between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama or his representatives that would alleviate the plight of the Tibetan people.
Out of a population of some 5 million, 130,000 Tibetans are in exile and nearly a million have died as a consequence of Chinese repression. In addition, some 2 million inhabitants are Chinese settlers imported to Tibetan territory by Beijing’s authorities. Most of the exiles have settled in Northern India and Nepal and they have done well under the direction of the Dalai Lama at keeping alive their traditions and their dreams of returning home.
Their dreams are speedily fading with the imminent completion of a railway linking central Tibet with China. When it opens in 2007, the pace of immigration of Han Chinese will pick up dramatically. Tibetans, already a minority in major cities, may simply be swamped.
Nevertheless, the Dalai Lama is always conciliatory on his remarks about this situation. He recently wrote in one of his pleads that: “I have always tried to find a solution through direct and honest discussions with the Chinese. It is my sincere belief that if the concerned parties were to meet and discuss their future with an open mind and a sincere desire to find a satisfactory and just solution, a breakthrough could be achieved. We must all exert ourselves to be reasonable and wise, and to meet in a spirit of frankness and understanding.”
Since 2002 there have been four rounds of talks between the Dalai Lama’s representatives and Chinese officials. Optimists see this as evidence that these arguments are beginning to work. But most Tibetans fear that China just wants to placate international opinion and is playing for time in its designs for complete Tibetan assimilation.
Our support gives the International Campaign for Tibet the necessary political clout and the financial wherewithal to work towards an end to the pervasive human right abuses, repression of religious freedom, and severe threats to the fragile ecosystem of the Tibetan plateau and the river headwaters that flow downward through Asia. La International Campaign for Tibet es un esfuerzo altruista encabezado por John Ackerly y representado públicamente en los medios internacionales por Richard Gere y otras personalidades, que se dedican a promover los derechos humanos en esa parte del mundo y a realizar en forma pacífica todos los esfuerzos posibles para acelerar una solución negociada entre el gobierno chino y el Dalai Lama o sus representantes que alivie el largo calvario que atraviesa el pueblo tibetano.
Hay más de 130.000 tibetanos en el exilio de una población actual de cinco millones. Cerca de un millón han muerto a consecuencia de la represión de los invasores que, además, han importado al territorio tibetano cerca de dos millones de colonos. La mayoría de los exiliados se han asentado en la India septentrional y Nepal y han logrado conservar bajo la dirección del Dalai Lama sus tradiciones y sus sueños de regresar.
Estos sueños se están desvaneciendo rápidamente con la inminente terminación del ferrocarril que enlazará la zona central del Tíbet con China. Cuando se abra en 2007 el volumen de inmigrantes chinos de la etnia Han aumentará extraordinariamente y los tibetanos, que ya son minoría en algunas grandes ciudades, quedarán totalmente abrumados.
Esto no obsta para que el Dalai Lama mantenga su posición conciliatoria en las declaraciones que hace públicas sobre esta situación. Recientemente, en uno de sus pedidos de ayuda, escribió que: “Siempre he tratado de encontrar una solución mediante discusiones directas y honestas con los chinos. Creo sinceramente que si las partes interesadas se encontraran para discutir su futuro con la mente abierta y un sincero deseo de encontrar una solución satisfactoria y justa, les sería posible hallar una salida. Todos tenemos que esforzarnos para ser razonables y sagaces y para encontrarnos con un espíritu de franqueza y comprensión”.
A partir de 2002 se han concertado cuatro rondas de conversaciones entre los representantes del Dalai Lama y las autoridades chinas. Los optimistas ven esto como evidencia de que estos argumentos están empezando a dar resultados. Empero, la mayoría de los tibetanos temen que China sólo trata de aplacar la opinión pública internacional y está haciendo tiempo para completar sus designios de asimilación total del Tíbet.
