Re:Windfall Tax on Retirement Income! - 2008/08/09 19:15
Vicente, please! You shouldn't give credit to this innuendo reproduced from a misguided and false propaganda campaign. These arguments have been advanced by some political extremists calling themselves Republicans who are distorting some facts and appealing to the worse fears of the elderly, i.e. losing part of their hard earned retirement income. In fact, they actually do a disservice to honest and hardworking Republican candidates handling solid arguments against their political foes.
The truth is that as the November 2006 elections gave Democrats control of the House of Representatives and at least parity in the Senate, Nancy Pelosi, as the new Speaker of the House, began pushing for potential means of raising revenue from the recent record profits of oil companies, including the possibility of enacting a windfall profits tax on the oil industry.
The Internet media falsely attributed to a pair of The New York Times reporters a satire that serve as the basis for claims advanced on the following months that Pelosi's tax proposal would include retirement income as well as stock market profits.
However, there is no such bill (approved or proposed) in Congress.
There are enough real mistakes, failures and lack of leadership in the Democratic dominated Congress, giving way to a rate a popularity as low as that of President Bush, that can be used as very good arguments for real "change" by chosing better legislators this November 2008.
