Autonomy for TIBET: the 2008 Beijing Olympics - 2006/06/06 16:23

Dear friends of freedom and participatory democracy:
During the 2008 Beijing Olympics the Chinese Government will put its best face forward to the global community – their goals being to be celebrated as a positive, new World Power.
However, long before the Olympic torch is lit in Beijing on August 8, 2008, a far different, far more historic race is taking place – the Race for Tibet.
For most of us, our sympathies clearly favor the Tibetan people. But this is one race that can indeed have two winners: Tibet and China.
Such is the most conciliatory stance taken by the Dalai Lama for long in his efforts to save his people from Chinese oppression and genocide. For the Dalai Lama and the people of Tibet, this international focus on China provides a rare and unique opportunity for negotiating Tibetan autonomy. For both Tibet and China, a resolution to the occupation in Tibet will contribute to peace and more prosperity for the entire Asian region.
By hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics, China wants to be positively recognized for its newly acquired global stature. At a minimum, China must take steps now to stop human rights abuses in Tibet. But make no mistake. This “win-win” scenario won’t happen automatically. People all over the World must take on a very special role in supporting these goals.
• People all over the World may urge politicians and their representatives and government officials to ask the Chinese government to enter sincere negotiations for Tibetan autonomy.
• People may contact and educate the media and Olympic corporate sponsors about the real situation in Tibet and how China may misuse the Olympics in an effort to delay, camouflage and confuse the Tibetan issue.
• People may urge Olympic athletes and celebrities from their respective countries to speak out and show their support for Tibetans.
• People may use the internet to engage and mobilize grassroots support and deliver action-oriented messages to the Chinese government, the U.S. government, the International Olympics Committee and other governments.
• People may help with their donations to the efforts of the International Campaign for Tibet (www.savetibet.org & www.racefortibet.org).

Estimados amigos de la libertad y la democracia participativa:
Durante las Olimpiadas de 2008 en Beijin, el gobierno chino mostrará su mejor semblante a la comunidad internacional – se propone lograr una apariencia positiva como nueva Potencia mundial.
No obstante, mucho antes de que la antorcha Olímpica ilumine los Juegos de Beijing el 7 de agosto de 2008, una carrera de obstáculos muy distinta y mucho más histórica está teniendo lugar – la Carrera por el Tíbet.
No me cabe duda de que la mayoría de nosotros simpatiza claramente con el pueblo tibetano. Empero, esta es una carrera que bien podría tener dos ganadores: Tíbet y China.
Así es la actitud conciliadora del Dalai Lama desde hace tiempo en sus esfuerzos para salvar a su pueblo de la opresión china y del genocidio. Para el Dalai Lama y su pueblo esta atención internacional enfocada en China ofrece una oportunidad rara y singular de promover las negociaciones a favor de la autonomía tibetana. Porque para Tibet y China el fin de la ocupación del país sometido daría impulso a la paz y la prosperidad de toda esa región asiática.
Como anfitriones de las Olimpiadas de 2008, los chinos aspiran a ser reconocidos positivamente a la luz de su recién adquirida estatura global. Para lograrlo, China debe dar como mínimo los pasos necesarios para poner fin a las violaciones de los derechos humanos en Tíbet. Pero, ¡no nos equivoquemos! Este escenario en el que todos ganamos no se logra automáticamente. Las personas conscientes de todo el mundo deben asumir un papel especial en apoyo de tales metas.
• Todos podemos exhortar a los políticos, representantes y funcionarios del gobierno de nuestros países a que exijan al Gobierno chino que acceda a sostener negociaciones sinceras orientadas a la autonomía tibetana.
• Todos podemos establecer contacto y educar a los medios de comunicación y a los patrocinadores Olímpicos sobre la situación actual del Tíbet y sobre las formas en que el gobierno chino puede manipular las Olimpiadas para enmascarar, demorar y confundir la realidad tibetana.
• Todos podemos pedir a los atletas Olímpicos y a otras celebridades de nuestros respectivos países que alcen la voz en apoyo de los tibetanos.
• Todos podemos utilizar el Internet para movilizar conciencias y apoyo a una campaña de mensajes al gobierno chino, al gobierno de los Estados Unidos, al Comité Olímpico Internacional y a otros gobiernos.
• Todos podemos ayudar también con nuestros donativos a los esfuerzos de la Campaña Internacional por el Tíbet (www.savetibet.org & www.racefortibet.org).
